‘Beastie Boys Square’ Proposed in New York City

A petition has been launched to have a street corner in New York named after the Beastie Boys.

Brooklyn native LeRoy McCarthy is proposing a plan to city council to have the intersection of Ludlow St., and Rivington St., be renamed "Beastie Boys Square." The location is the same place where the cover of the group’s classic 1989 album 'Paul Boutique' was shot.

"I think the Beastie Boys represent New York in a certain way," he told DNAinfo.com. "They grew up here. They are New Yorkers."

Last year, McCarthy launched a campaign to have a street named after the late rapper Notorious B.I.G. in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill area, but was unsuccessful.

The Beastie Boys petition, which was launched in September, has garnered 250 digital signatures, so far.

Vicky Dalva, who co-owns the eatery Wolfnights, which is featured on the Beastie Boys’ cover, believes the street honor would be a great way to remember Adam "MCA" Yauch, who died from cancer in May 2012.

"When Adam Yauch passed away, people came here for three or four days putting candles and flowers out, taking photos, really mourning his death," she said. "At least one person comes in each week asking if it's Paul's Boutique."

"I think that the Lower East Side, what it used to be, is a good place to honor the Beastie Boys," adds McCarthy. "It represents New York. New York is always changing, New York is always on the move, New York is dirty [and] it is beautiful."

In addition to the Beastie Boys petition, McCarthy is also looking into get a street named after the Wu-Tang Clan in the Park Hill neighborhood of the group's native hometown of Staten Island.
